Stay or go? Let’s go!
Logbook Day 10 – Kakan to Zirje

Looking out from the protected Kakan bay, high waves with white crowns are visible. That looks heavy. Shell we stay? Should we go? Where to?

We decided to “just” get to the next island, Zirje, just some miles further south. Rounding the northern end of Kakan, we are hit by 20-25kn of headwind. Just with the fock we cross over into the lee of Zirje island. Unfortunately the strong wind is straight from ahead. Waves are high, wind against, … we motor some 3-4 hours to round the south tip of Zirje. A narrow passage, where wind and waves are channeled. 2-3 m waves rolling in from the Adriatic and heavy gusts make the Jolie Fleur lean heavily . Scary. Happy to have Holger on board to lend some hands.

We turn downwind, jib is up to stabilize the rolling. The 3m waves push us, roll us, wet us, …. not so much fun. Full concentration on the helm to keep the Jolie Fleur pointed straight, not getting turned sideways to the waves.

Some 45 minutes of action and we getting into the more calm waters of the anchorage bay. We dock onto a buoy. Calming down and be happy all is good and nothing broke.

Taking out the SUP to go to shore. Having a hike to a historic fortress. Fantastic views up there. The Jolie Fleur down there in the bay safely at a buoy. Just two more boats are in the bay. Not too many due to the heavy weather.

We get dinner at the local restaurant, Kanoba Stupica. Excellent food, friendly service. A good place to wait for a storm to pass.
